Summer Session 2020   -   Click here for the video message

As most of you know, we are supposed to begin our Summer Session on Monday, May 4, 2020. Over the past few weeks, I have been preparing for our opening so we could deal with all the new regulations that will be put in place.

As of now, I am planning to open our Summer Session on May 4th, regardless of where we may be. If we can be here at the Dojo, that would be great. If not, we’ll make it work. Anyway, here is how we will deal with opening for that session.

First, here are some of the changes we will have to implement in order to open:

Effective upon our re-opening, these are the changes we will make:

1.       We have removed our spectator area. All spectators will need to remain in their cars or, if the weather is nice, chairs will be provided to sit at a "Social Distance" away from each other in the parking lot.

2.       Each class grouping will have 2 "Prime Time" classes of 60 minutes and 3 "Early" classes of 60 minutes per week.

3.       All "Early Classes" will be recorded and shown later that evening in case students are unable to attend the earlier classes in person. The "Prime Time Classes" will not be recorded.  I’ll talk more about the schedule in just a moment.

4.       Until such a time that this virus is no longer a threat, we will eliminate all contact training drills and remain a safe distance from others during training.

5.       If you are coughing or sneezing, even if it's due to allergies, please stay home and train via our video classes.

6.       If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask or gloves, you will be permitted to do so. (We might be required to do so anyway.)

7.       At class end, we will eliminate shaking hands, but rather bow as a group to say "Thank you for training".

8.       There will be a 30-minute gap between classes. We ask students to leave the dojo immediately after class and we ask all incoming students to arrive NO earlier than 10 minutes before the start of your class. This will allow time to quickly clean and sanitize the dojo for the incoming students.

Second, this will be our Summer Training Schedule:    In order to provide our students with proper instruction while we regulate the number of students per class, as well as provide an adequate time frame to disinfect and sanitize between classes, here is the schedule we will use for our Summer Session Training.  A copy of this new schedule will be available on our website.

SuperKids (3/4): Friday morning 10:30-11:10 AM

SuperKids (5/6): Monday & Wednesday morning 10:30-11:10 AM

White/Yellow/Orange (Novice):            Monday 3:30-4:30 PM

                                                                        Tuesday & Friday 5:00-6:00 PM

                                                                        Wednesday 6:30-7:30 PM

Saturday 9:30-11:00 AM

Blue/Purple/Green (Intermediate):      Monday & Thursday 5:00-6:00 PM

                                                                        Tuesday & Friday 6:30-7:30 PM

                                                                        Wednesday 3:30-4:30 PM

Brown/Brown 3rd/Black Belt (Advanced):   Monday & Thursday 6:30-7:30 PM

                                                                        Tuesday & Friday 3:30-4:30 PM

                                                                        Wednesday 5:00-6:00 PM

So, we are going to go ahead with this schedule beginning Monday, May 4, 2020 regardless of our location. If we have to remain at home, all classes will go live on Zoom at their scheduled time. Since Zoom only allows 40-minute sessions, we’ll use that 40 minutes and then give you an additional assignment for the remainder of the class. Students should wear their uniforms and belts for this training, just like being in the Dojo.

It’s time for us to get back to work and get busy. I’ve cleaned the school thoroughly and rearranged it to provide better training space and eliminated the spectator area for when we can get back. Whether it’s in the Dojo, or on Zoom, I can’t wait to get back to training. Keep working with our videos for now, and I’ll see you soon.

Good Morning Rising Sun,

This is a special message for our parents and adult students.

I know this is going to be a sensitive subject, but I need to talk to you “in person” about business, specifically tuitions.

It is now a really hard and difficult time for all of us, while many are not working and businesses are closed. But like you, our business needs to continue paying our bills in order to survive.

Along with this message, I am sending out our 4th quarter membership statement and invoices. These tuition payments are the only way that Rising Sun will be able to survive during this pandemic. There are still several tuition payments still due for the 3rd quarter and I am hoping that they will be able to be paid.

Although we have not been able to open our doors, we have not been closed either.  I have been working as hard as ever to keep our students training and learning through our online class videos and more. I have opened up private Face-time lessons, as well as e-mail, text and more to help answer questions. And, tried to provide fun events sponsored by Rising Sun to keep up the interest and enthusiasm.

As you receive your tuition invoices, please let me know if you are having any problems with the payments due to job loss or other reasons associated with this pandemic and hopefully we could be able to work something out. Not responding to the invoice and leaving us wondering about whether or not you are returning is as good as stopping your membership. Rising Sun, like all other small businesses, depend on our members and this CoronaVirus has the potential do a lot of damage to our business. We need you to keep your memberships up to date in order to survive.

Although our doors are required to remain closed for at least another week, I will continue to provide our students with the best training available under these circumstances.

If you’re able to send your payments, you can mail them to the school or call me for credit card payments. Please do not send credit card information via e-mail or text. Automatic payments will not be deducted until I hear from you.  If you’re not able to send payment, please contact me.

I want to thank you for being a member of Rising Sun. I truly love all of the pictures sent of the kids working out with our videos and I hope I won’t have to see the pictures much longer. Instead, I hope I’ll be able to see everyone in person. Thank you for understanding. Take care and God Bless.

Okay Rising Sun,

So I’m going to add one more aspect to our “At-Home Training” videos.  If you are working out with the video, you notice that I am not going too far into detail with each and every technique. I have to control the video length and size that we are uploading. However, if you are having ANY questions about a technique or requirement, I am now going to offer Facetime lessons to answer your questions.

Please call or text me at 412-498-8302 or e-mail me at to schedule a Facetime lesson. This will not be a full 30-minute lesson, but rather a quick 2-3 minute call to answer ANY question about training. No question is silly. If you're not sure, ask. Remember, "If you don't know what you're doing, then you don't know what you're doing".  If you call, please leave a message as I may not answer due to other calls. There is no charge for this new addition. It will be covered under your paid tuition. Thanks.

Well, that didn’t last long. In last weekend’s letter, I said we would remain open for “as long as we were permitted”. Well, now we are no longer permitted, and that is best for everyone to help control the spread of this virus. Effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020, we will pause our training at the Dojo and move all training into the comfort of your home. I will revisit this situation on Monday, March 23, 2020 and continue to do so each week.

Be assured, I have been working overtime to create the best possible way for our students to continue training during this pandemic. I want to provide everyone with the same great training, but now on your own schedule.  I originally created a new Facebook group called “RSMA Live” to show our daily training videos. It was becoming increasingly difficult to upload those videos, plus many of our students do not have Facebook.

I have since created our own Youtube Channel called RisingSunMA. This is a private channel that can only be seen through the links to our videos. I tried to keep it as private as possible.

To make it as accessible to our students as possible, I am placing the link to our daily training video on our website. When entering, simply click on your class for the day. That will take you directly to the day’s training video. If you have any questions about your training, or would like to schedule a private lesson to enhance the online training, please contact me by phone or text at 412-498-8302 or by E-Mail at

Thank you for your continued support of Rising Sun and I hope we can get back into the dojo soon. Take care and be safe.

Sensei Hosler

Attention ALL Rising Sun Members,

At Rising Sun, we are taking the current CoronaVirus situation seriously. However; because we are a small school that financially depends on training, we have no plans on closing our facility during these uncertain times and we will be proceeding with our normal schedules as long as we are permitted. We ask that you please use caution and be smart about personal hygiene and health.

What will RISING SUN do?

Ø At Rising Sun, we pledge to keep our facility safe by continuing, as we always have been doing, to clean and disinfect our mats and lobby on a daily basis, use Lysol spray and Clorox disinfecting wipes on all areas and equipment touched by students and spectators and keeping our bathroom clean and disinfected.

Ø Effective immediately, we will also refrain from any contact training with partners for the near future.

Ø We will now offer daytime private lessons Monday through Friday to our students to enhance their training. Our normal rate is $25 per 30-minute lesson, however; we will offer a reduced rate if you schedule more than one lesson per week during this crisis.

Ø Develop a series of “At-Home” Training Videos. More information is listed below.

Ø We are also postponing our annual Family Night until later this spring.

What can YOU do?

Ø DO NOT TRAIN if you are ill or have any flu like systems.

Ø Wash hands before and after class.

Ø Always clean your uniforms, (pants, t-shirts, tops) after EVERY class.

Ø If you have to sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow sleeve.

We also realize that many people are still reluctant to come to class during this pandemic. That is totally understandable. But we don’t want you to lose any training time, so we are creating a series of practice videos for you to continue your training at home. Our videos will be available through Facebook to current members of our school. We are creating a special Facebook group called “RSMA Live”. This group will be private and only members of the group will be able to see the videos. Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, a new video will be posted daily, Monday through Friday at 12:00 Noon and will be replaced the next day with another video.  We are also creating a separate SuperKids Training Video for our (5/6) year old class which will be available from 12:00 Noon Monday through 12:00 Noon Tuesday, and another video from 12:00 Noon Wednesday through 12:00 Noon Thursday. The (3/4) SuperKids video will be available 12:00 Noon Tuesday through 12:00 Noon Wednesday.  In order to watch the videos, and get credit for your training, you must follow these procedures:

1.     You must be on Facebook.

2.     You will need to ask to join “RSMA Live” from your Facebook page. (We are NOT making this available to everyone unless you request to join.)

3.     When you watch the video, AND PRACTICE, leave your name in the comment section so we can record your training points towards your rank advancement.

4.     All tuition must be current in order to be accepted into the group.

Nothing can replace the actual training you receive at the dojo, but we are confident that if you follow the training video, you will still receive effective training.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call or text 412-498-8302, or e-mail at  Stay Safe. Be Smart. Train Hard.

Through Hinode-Ryu,

      Sensei Chuck Hosler
