Kata: Taikyoku
To execute this kata using the compass directions, make sure that north is the direction that you start from. You will only need to use the 8 compass directions of north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. Place the compass directions on your surrounding walls to make sure your directions are correct.
Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)
1. Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.
2. Maintain focus (west) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch.
3. Turn 180 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right front stance, execute a right down block.
4. Maintain focus (east) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left front punch.
5. Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the north direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.
6. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch.
7. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left front punch.
8. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch. (kiai)
9. Turn 270 degrees to the left until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.
10. Maintain focus (east) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch.
11. Turn 180 degrees to the right until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right front stance, execute a right down block.
12. Maintain focus (west) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left front punch.
13. Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.
14. Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch.

To return to the ready position, focus 90 degrees to the left until the focus is back to the north direction, bring the left foot back to the right foot and then to the ready position.

Self Defense: Attacks
Collar Grab - reach forward and grab the lapel of your opponent
Choke Hold - reach forward with both hands and execute a choke with both hands around your opponent's neck
Wrist Grab - reach straight forward and grab your opponent's wrist. (Note: If you're reaching with your right, you should be grasping your opponent's left wrist.
Front Punch - Knuckle up with your opponent. Step back into a fighting stance with guard up. Travel forward with back leg and execute front punch to stomach.
Round Punch -Knuckle up with your opponent. Step back into a fighting stance with guard up. Travel forward with back leg and execute round punch towards the head.
Push -Knuckle up with your opponent. Step back into a fighting stance with guard up. Travel forward with back leg and execute push towards the shoulders.
Earslap- Knuckle up with your opponent. Step back into a fighting stance with guard up. Travel forward with back leg and execute an earslap to the sides of the head.
Bearhug - From behind your opponent, wrap your arms around them with their arms pinned to their sides.
Headlock - From the side of your opponent, wrap your arm around their neck pulling them forward and down towards your belt.
Uppercut - Knuckle up with your opponent. Step forward into a fighting stance with guard up. Shuffle step with front leg and execute an uppercut strike towards their chin.
Overhead - Knuckle up with your opponent. Step back into a fighting stance with guard up. Travel forward with back leg and execute overhead strike towards the top of their head.
