Black Belt Requirements:  

The following are written versions of some of the required techniques and Kata's within the Black Belt ranks.

 

Kata: Kwanku - "To Look At The Sky"   (Shodan Black Belt)

To execute this kata using the compass directions, make sure that north is the direction that you start from. You will only need to use the 8 compass directions of north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. Place the compass directions on your surrounding walls to make sure your directions are correct.

Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)

  1. Maintain focus in the north direction  and stance position. Execute a low "Rising Sun" symbol at belt level. Begin to raise the hands to a level above the forehead. Maintain your focus straight forward until your hands cross in front of your focus. At that point, allow your focus to follow the Rising Sun symbol to its' endpoint.
  2. While your focus remains high, open the hands in a circular motion back towards the Ki. When your hands reach a downward diagonal level, approximately 4 and 8 on a clock, sharply bring focus directly forward while the hands meet at the Ki with the left hand executing a Shuto into the open right hand.
  3. Focus left, (moving only the left leg) turn 90 degrees into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.
  4. Focus right, (moving only the right leg) turn 180 degrees into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
  5. Focus left, (moving only the right leg) turn 90 degrees into a horse stance. Prepare a left swordhand block by crossing an open left hand under an extended right preparation arm. With dynamic breathing, execute the left swordhand block.
  6. Maintain focus (north) and stance (horse) - execute a right center punch.
  7. Maintain focus (north) - elongate the horse stance to the left and execute a right reverse forearm block.
  8. Maintain focus (north) - return to the horse stance and execute a left center punch.
  9. Maintain focus (north) - elongate the horse stance to the right and execute a left reverse forearm block.
  10. Focus 90 degrees right, bring left leg halfway up to right leg, then bring right leg back to left leg into an attention stance, execute a hammer catch at the left hip.
  11. Maintain stance (attention stance), focus 90 degrees to the right until focus is in the south direction - execute a right side kick and a right backfist strike. Change focus 180 degrees to the left until focus is in the north direction - Retract the side kick into a chamber position and prepare the arms for a left swordhand block. Step back with the right leg into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.
  12. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right leg into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
  13. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the left leg into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.
  14. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a right spearhand strike. KIAI
  15. Focus left, turn 180 degrees, moving only the left leg, enter a left front stance, execute a left open hand rising block while simultaneously executing a right, reverse shuto strike.
  16. Maintain focus (south), execute a rear leg front kick. On the re-chamber of the front kick, pivot left and focus 180 degrees to the north direction while entering a left crane stance and a left down block preparation.
  17. Maintain focus to the north, step back to a left back stance and execute a double block, left down block / right backarm block.
  18. Maintain focus north, elongate the stance into a left narrow front stance, execute a right swordhand strike.
  19. Maintain focus, while dynamically executing a left down block, draw your left foot back to the right into an attention stance facing the northeast direction.
  20. Maintain focus, moving only the left leg, enter a left front stance, execute a left open hand rising block while simultaneously executing a right, reverse shuto strike.
  21. Maintain focus (north), execute a rear leg front kick. On the re-chamber of the front kick, pivot left and focus 180 degrees to the south direction while entering a left crane stance and a left down block preparation.
  22. Maintain focus to the south, step back to a left back stance and execute a double block, left down block / right backarm block.

While executing the front kick, simultaneously execute a left backfist strike, and leave it extended when you enter your stance.
  27. Maintain focus (east) -  execute an right augmented elbow strike into the extended left hand.
  28. Focus 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter an attention stance, execute a left hammer catch.
  29. Focus 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the west direction. Execute a right front kick, then step down so that you are in a right front stance facing the west direction. While executing the front kick, simultaneously execute a right backfist strike, and leave it extended when you enter your stance.
  30. Maintain focus (west) -  execute an left augmented elbow strike into the extended left hand.
  31. Focus left, turn 180 degrees to the left until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.
  32. Focus 45 degrees to the right (southeast) - travel forward into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
  33. Turn 135 degrees to the right until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
  34. Focus 45 degrees to the left (southwest) - travel forward into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.
  35. Focus left, moving only the left leg, turn 45 degrees to enter a left front stance, execute a left open hand rising block while simultaneously executing a right, reverse shuto strike.
  36. Maintain focus, travel forward into a right cross stance by executing a right front kick. Upon entering the right cross stance, execute a right back-knuckle strike.
  37. Maintain focus, travel in reverse to a right front stance, execute a right forearm block followed by a double punch (left reverse punch followed by a right front punch).
  38. Turn 360 degrees to the left until the focus is back to the south direction (moving the right leg, then the left leg) - jump into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
  39. Maintain focus (south) - Draw left leg up to right leg, then right leg backwards to a left back stance, execute in a circular motion a low level  swordhand block.
  40. Maintain focus, travel forward into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
  41. Focus left, moving only the left leg, turn 270 degrees until the focus is in the west direction enter a left front stance, execute a left forearm block follow by a right reverse punch.
  42. Focus right, moving only the right leg, turn 180 degrees until the focus is in the east direction enter a right front stance, execute a right forearm block follow by a left reverse punch, then a right front punch.
  43. Focus 90 degrees right, bring left leg halfway up to right leg, then bring right leg back to left leg into an attention stance, execute a hammer catch at the left hip.
  44. Maintain stance (attention stance), focus 90 degrees to the right until focus is in the south direction - execute a right side kick and a right backfist strike. Change focus 180 degrees to the left until focus is in the north direction - Retract the side kick into a chamber position and prepare the arms for a left swordhand block. Step back with the right leg into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.
  45. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right leg into a right narrow front stance, execute a right spearhand strike.
  46. Turn 360 degrees to the left to enter a left side horse stance. While turning, rotate the right spearhand to a palms up position and slightly draw that hand towards your right ear. Upon entering the stance, execute a left back-knuckle strike. With a slight shuffle of the stance forward, execute a left backfist strike.
  47. Maintain focus and stance, execute a right augmented elbow strike into the open left hand.
  48. Maintain stance, focus 180 degrees to the right to the south direction, execute a left hammer catch followed by a right down block.
  49. Maintain focus and stance, execute a left hook punch.
  50. Focus 90 degrees to the right toward the west direction, moving only the left leg, travel forward into a horse stance, hands to the hips.
  51. Maintain focus and stance, execute a downward X block followed by an open hand rising X block.
  52. Maintain the open hand rising X block, focus right, turn 270 degrees to the south direction by moving only the left leg into a right narrow front stance. After entering the stance, with dynamic breathing, draw hands down to a closed middle level X block.
  53. Maintain focus, execute a jump front kick to a right cross stance. Upon entering the stance, execute an augmented hammer strike. KIAI

To return to the ready position, focus right, turn 180 degrees moving the left foot to a ready position while executing a scooping motion with the right arm.

Kata: Agaru-Sho - "First Rising Sun Kata"   (Nidan Black Belt)

To execute this kata using the compass directions, make sure that north is the direction that you start from.   1. Maintain focus in the north direction, slightly pivot heels outward from the attention stance. Execute a low "Rising Sun" symbol at belt level. Begin to raise the hands to a level above the forehead. Maintain your focus straight forward until your hands cross in front of your focus. At that point, allow your focus to follow the Rising Sun symbol to its' endpoint.
  2. While your focus remains high, open the hands in a circular motion back towards the Ki. When your hands reach a downward diagonal level, approximately 4 and 8 on a clock, sharply bring focus directly forward while the hands meet at the Ki in a double shuto position. At that point, pivot heels inward from the attention stance.
  3. Maintain focus and stance, with dynamic breathing, draw the hands towards the body while pivoting toes inward from the attention stance.
  4. Maintain focus, travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left forearm block followed by a dynamic right reverse punch.
  5. Maintain focus, travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right forearm block followed by a dynamic left reverse punch.
  6. Maintain focus, travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left forearm block followed by a right reverse punch.
  7. Maintain focus and stance, after drawing hands back towards your ribs, execute dynamic finger pokes.
  8. Maintain focus and stance, extend open hand preparations straight up above your head, then execute double open hand down blocks to the side.
  9. Focus left, moving the right leg only, turn 180 degrees into a left front stance, execute double open hand blocks, left down block / right reverse forearm block.
  10. Maintain focus, stance and open hand down block position, rotate the right hand palm down then dynamically draw back towards body.
  11. Maintain focus, travel forward into a right front stance, execute double open hand blocks, right down block / left reverse forearm block.
  12. Maintain focus, stance and open hand down block position, rotate the left hand palm down then dynamically draw back towards body.
  13. Maintain focus, travel forward into a left front stance, execute double open hand blocks, left down block / right reverse forearm block.
  14. Maintain focus, stance and open hand down block position, rotate the right hand palm down then dynamically draw back towards body.
  15. Focus 90 degrees right to the west direction, pivot into a right front stance, execute a right forearm block followed by a left reverse punch then a right front punch.
  16. Focus left, turn 180 degrees to the east direction, moving only the left leg, enter a left front stance, execute a left forearm block followed by a right reverse punch.
  17. Focus 90 degrees right to the south direction, pivot into a right front stance, execute a right forearm block followed by a left reverse punch then a right front punch.
  18. Focus left, turn 180 degrees to the north direction, moving only the left leg, enter a left front stance, execute a left forearm block followed by a right reverse punch.
  19. Maintain focus, with a slight pivot to the northeast direction, enter an attention stance with a right hammer catch by executing a slight step with the right followed by bringing the left foot back.
  20. Focus 90 degrees to the left, travel forward into a left side horse stance by executing a left circular hook stance with a left back-knuckle strike.
  21. Maintain focus. Left back-knuckle strike draws back to the left hip while the right leg crosses in front of the left.
  22. Maintain focus, execute a left front kick to enter a side horse stance. Once in the stance, execute a left horizontal hammer strike.
  23. Maintain focus and stance position,  pivot hips into target and execute a right center punch with the left in a preparatory guard above the punch.
  24. Maintain focus, return to side horse stance and execute a left rising block.
  25. Focus 90 degrees to the left to the south direction, with a slight pivot to the southwest direction, enter an attention stance with a right hammer catch by executing a slight step with the right followed by bringing the left foot back.
  26. Focus 90 degrees to the left, travel forward into a left side horse stance by executing a left circular hook stance with a left back-knuckle strike.
  27. Maintain focus. Left back-knuckle strike draws back to the left hip while the right leg crosses in front of the left.
  28. Maintain focus, execute a left front kick to enter a side horse stance. Once in the stance, execute a left horizontal hammer strike.
  29. Maintain focus and stance position,  pivot hips into target and execute a right center punch with the left in a preparatory guard above the punch.
  30. Maintain focus, return to side horse stance and execute a left rising block.
  31. Focus 90 degrees left to the east direction, with a slight pivot to the southeast direction, enter an attention stance with a right hammer catch by executing a slight step with the right followed by bringing the left foot back.
  32. Focus 90 degrees to the left to the north, travel forward into a left side horse stance by executing a left circular hook stance with a left back-knuckle strike followed by a left open hand backarm block.
  33. Maintain focus, moving only the right leg, step into a left front stance, execute a right reverse punch. KIAI
  34. Focus left, moving only the left leg turn 45 degrees into a left cat stance, execute a low level leg block.
  35. Maintain focus northwest, travel forward into a left back stance. In a circular motion from the leg block, execute a right reverse hammer catch followed by a left horizontal hammer strike then a right reverse punch.
  36. Maintain focus, travel forward with a right reverse wheel kick. Upon the re-chamber of the kick, focus left 180 degrees to the southeast direction, step down with the right into a left front stance, execute a right reverse punch.
  37. Maintain focus, southeast, travel forward into a right narrow front stance, execute a low level swordhand block.
  38. Focus left, pivot 135 degrees to the north direction into a left front stance, execute an open hand rising X block.
  39. Maintain focus and stance, close hands and dynamically draw hands down to a middle level X block.
  40. Maintain focus, travel forward into a left narrow front stance by executing a left jump front kick, followed by a downward X block.
  41. Focus 180 degrees right to the south direction, moving only the left leg, travel forward into a left back stance, execute a left low level swordhand block.
  42. Focus 180 degrees right to the north direction. Pivot into a right back stance, execute in a circular motion a right low level swordhand block.
  43. Focus 90 degrees left to the west direction. Shuffle the right leg forwards to a horse stance, execute double dynamic open hand forearm blocks.
  44. Maintain focus and stance, execute double open hand down blocks.
  45. Maintain focus, while raising your center and your stance to an attention stance, execute an open hand rising X block. Maintain focus in the west direction, but raise the focus to the level of the block.
  46. Maintain focus. While your focus remains high, open the hands in a sliding motion through a Rising Sun symbol and continue in a circular motion back towards the Ki. When your hands reach a downward diagonal level, approximately 4 and 8 on a clock, sharply bring focus directly forward while the hands meet at the Ki in a double shuto position. At that point, pivot heels inward from the attention stance.
  47. Maintain focus and stance, with dynamic breathing, draw the hands towards the body while pivoting toes inward from the attention stance.
  48. Focus 90 degrees left to the south direction, moving only the left leg, enter a left back stance, execute double blocks, left down block / right backarm block.
  49. Maintain focus, travel forward into a right back stance, execute double blocks, right down block / left backarm block.

Agaru-Kuren  “Rising Sun Crane Kata”

In 2016, our Competition Team was given the task of developing a Kata for competition. It had to be made of traditional techniques from all of the Kata’s we knew. Every member chose their favorite Kata sequence and we were able to create this form. It took us several years to complete and make final, which shows how difficult of a process this can be. In fact, several of the members that originally started this Kata weren’t here to see the final result. It is a very strong and powerful Kata based on Shotokan movements. You will notice that many of the moves represent balance and being able to hold your balance on one leg, thus giving it the title, Rising Sun Crane.

Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)

  1. Maintain focus in the north direction, slightly pivot heels outward from the attention stance. Execute a low "Rising Sun" symbol at belt level. Begin to raise the hands to a level above the forehead. Maintain your focus straight forward until your hands cross in front of your focus. At that point, allow your focus to follow the Rising Sun symbol to its' endpoint. The endpoint is a low level War and Peace symbol at the Ki.

2.      Maintain focus, step backwards with the left into a right narrow front stance, draw the war and peace symbol up across the chest to a rising leg block.
