Kata: Bassai (Brown Belt)
To execute this kata using the compass directions, make sure that north is the direction that you start from. You will only need to use the 8 compass directions of north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. Place the compass directions on your surrounding walls to make sure your directions are correct.
Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)
1. Focus forward (north) - attention stance, enter the war & peace symbol.
2. Maintain focus (north)- travel forward with the right leg into a right cross stance, execute a right augmented forearm block.
3. Turn 180 degrees to the left until the focus is in the south direction, moving only the left leg, enter a left front stance, execute a left forearm block.
4. Maintain focus (south) and stance (left front), execute a right reverse forearm block.
5. Turn 180 degrees to the right until the focus is in the north direction, moving only the right leg, enter a right front stance, execute a left reverse hammer block.
6. Maintain focus (north) and stance (right front), execute a right forearm block.
7. Turn 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction. Moving only the right leg, enter an attention stance while executing a low level scoop with the right arm into a hammer block preparation with the left arm extended towards the east direction.
8. Maintain focus (east) - travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a right hammer block.
9. Maintain focus (east) and stance (right front) - execute a left reverse forearm block.
10. Focus 90 degrees to the left until your focus is in the north direction, moving only the left leg - enter a horse stance, hammer catch at the right hip.
11. Maintain focus (north) and stance (horse) - execute a left swordhand block.
12. Maintain focus (north) and stance (horse) - execute a right center punch.
13. Maintain focus (north) - elongate the horse stance to the left and execute a right reverse forearm block.
14. Maintain focus (north) - return to the horse stance and execute a left center punch.
15. Maintain focus (north) - elongate the horse stance to the right and execute a left reverse forearm block.
16. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right leg into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
17. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the left leg into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.

21. Maintain focus (north) - with dynamic breathing, execute a press block with the arms as you enter a left front stance.
22. Maintain focus (north) - open the arms into a double side down block position while chambering the right leg in preparation for a kick. Pivot the body to the left as you execute a right side kick to the north direction at knee level and simultaneously executing a right backfist strike to the north direction at mastoid process level. Immediately after kick and backfist, focus left until the focus is in the south direction - re-chamber the right leg and prepare the arms for a swordhand block. Maintain focus (south) - step down with the right leg into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.
23. Maintain focus (south) - travel forward with the right leg into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.
24. Maintain focus (south) - Step back with the right leg into an attention stance, rest position.
25. Maintain focus (south) - lower center, then raise center while maintaining the attention stance and execute a double rising block.
26. Maintain focus - Travel forward with the right leg into a narrow right front stance, step forward with the left leg into an attention stance, execute a double hammer strike to the ribs.
27. Maintain focus (south) - travel forward with the right and left legs by dropping into a right front stance and executing a right front punch. Kiai.
28. Maintain focus (south)- maintain stance (right front stance) - execute a right open hand rising block and a left open hand down block for a preparatory position.
29. Focus 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the north direction. Moving only the left leg, enter a left front stance, maintain preparatory position with arms.
30. Maintain focus (north) and stance (left front stance) - execute a right swordhand strike.
31. Maintain focus (north) - pivot hips into a left balanced stance, execute double blocks (right - rising block / left down block).
32. Maintain focus (north) - draw left foot back to right foot and enter an attention stance that is slightly shifted to a 45 degree angle facing the northeast direction - maintain arm position.
33. Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right leg into a right side horse stance, execute a right side down block.
34. Focus 180 degrees to the left until the focus is in the south direction. Maintain stance, execute double hook punches with right arm over the left.
35. Maintain focus (south), maintain stance (side horse stance) - with an open left hand, execute with dynamic breathing and open hand backarm block.
36. Maintain focus (south), Maintain arm position - pivot hips forward into a left narrow front stance.
37. Maintain focus (south), maintain arm position - execute a right leg, reverse wheel kick into the open left hand, then step down into a right narrow front stance.
38. Focus 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the east direction - pivot hips to enter a horse stance, execute a right elbow strike into the open left hand.
39. Maintain focus (east), maintain stance (horse stance) - execute a right down block while leaving the closed left fist across the chest.
40. Maintain focus (east), maintain stance (horse stance) - execute a left downward punch while bringing the closed right fist across the chest. Then execute a right downward punch while bringing the closed left fist across the chest.
41. Focus 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the south direction - enter an attention stance and execute a left hammer catch.
42. Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right U-punch.
43. Maintain focus (south) - bring right leg back to an attention stance, execute a right hammer catch.
44. Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left U-punch.
45. Maintain focus (south) - bring left leg back to an attention stance, execute a left hammer catch.
46. Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right U-punch.

49. Focus 45 degrees to the right until the focus is in the north-east direction - moving only the right leg, enter a right back stance - execute a right swordhand block.
50. Focus 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the north-west direction - moving only the right leg, draw the right foot to the left foot then backwards to enter a left back stance - maintain the right swordhand block position, but draw the right hand behind you so the right arm (still in a swordhand position) is in the opposite direction of your focus. (left hand is open, palm upward at the xyphoid process).
51. Maintain focus (north-west) - in a shuffle motion, travel forward maintaining the left back stance position - execute a left swordhand block. Kiai.
52. Focus 45 degrees to the right until the focus is in the north direction - after a small step with right leg to regain balance, bring left foot back to right foot into an attention stance - execute the War & Peace symbol.
From the attention stance position, bring hands to the sides, bow, return to the ready position.

1. Maintain focus in the north direction. Step out with the left leg into an elongated horse stance, execute a middle level x block.
2. Maintain focus in the north direction. With dynamic breathing, enter a right kneeling stance while executing a right down block. Left arm remains in a guard position.
3. Maintain focus in the north direction. Quickly jump to a horse stance and execute a left hammer catch.
4. Focus 90 degrees to the right until your focus is in the east direction. Turn into a right front stance and execute a right down block.
5. Focus left 90 degrees until your focus is in the north direction. Draw the left leg to the right leg into an attention stance and execute a left hammer catch.
6. Maintain focus in the north direction. Step out with the left leg into a horse stance, reverse the hammer catch to the right hip.
7. Maintain focus in the north direction. Travel forward into a left front stance - execute a left down block.
8. Maintain focus in the north direction. Maintain stance (left front stance) - execute a right rising reverse punch.
9. Maintain focus in the north direction. Maintain stance (left front stance) - execute a reverse claw strike to a grab position.

16. Maintain focus in the south direction. Execute a right knee thrust while drawing your right hand back to your right hip. Maintain and hold the knee thrust position.
17. Maintain focus in the south direction. Step forward with the right leg into a right cross stance and execute a left under punch.
18. Maintain focus in the south direction. Step back with the left leg into a right elongated side horse stance - execute a right down block.
19. Focus left. Turn 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the north direction. Moving only the left leg - turn into a left front stance - execute a left down block.
20. Maintain focus (north) - pivot hips to the right to execute a left circular hook stance into a horse stance - execute a left circular open hand back arm block at the same time the hook stance is in the circular motion.

To return to the ready position, maintain focus north, after a small step with the right foot, bring left foot back to right foot then to a ready position.

Chokes
Choke #1 While your attacker is bent over in a position to tackle you, take a slight step backward and bring your arm under their throat. Stand up to apply the choke.
Choke #2 From a Frankenstein attack, step forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute a left cover block then a right reverse scooping block. Take your right arm straight across their throat while moving your right leg forward to an attention stance. Continue moving your left leg around so that you are directly behind the attacker and apply the choke.
Choke #3 While your attacker is on their back on the ground, mount them and cross your arms by placing your left hand on their left collar and your right hand on their right collar. Squeeze to apply the choke.
Choke #4 Your opponent starts from all fours and begins to stand up. As they rise, bring your arm across their throat to put on the choke and pull them backwards on top of you. As they fall backwards on you, wrap your legs around their waist. Pull the choke tight and squeeze the legs downward to apply pressure.
Points of Balance
Points of Balance #1 With your opponent on all fours, you attack from the left side. With your left arm, trap the attackers left wrist and pull toward the side. With your right arm, press on the left shoulder and push forward drawing your opponent to the floor.
Points of Balance #2 With your opponent on all fours, you attack from the right side. With your right arm, trap the attackers right wrist and pull toward the side. With your left arm, press on the right shoulder and push forward drawing your opponent to the floor.
Points of Balance #3 With your opponent on all fours, you attack from the left side. With your left arm, trap the attackers left wrist to pull toward the side. The attacker pulls their arm away, so quickly trap the right arm and pull towards you and roll them to their back.
Points of Balance #4 With your opponent on all fours, you attack from the right side. With your right arm, trap the attackers right wrist to pull toward the side. The attacker pulls their arm away, so quickly trap the left arm and pull towards you and roll them to their back.
Grappling Techniques
Grappling #1 From your back, opponent is over you in a straddled position with a collar grab attack. Trap opponent's right hand with your left hand, reach upward with your right arm towards opponent's armpit, push strong with your right leg and roll towards your left ear.
Grappling #2 From your back, opponent is over you in a straddled position with a collar grab attack. Trap opponent's left hand with your right hand, reach upward with your left arm towards opponent's armpit, push strong with your left leg and roll towards your right ear.
Grappling #3 From your back, opponent is over you in a straddled position with a collar grab attack. Trap opponent's right leg with your left arm, reach upward with your right arm towards opponent's armpit, push strong with your right leg and roll towards your left side.
Grappling #4 From your back, opponent is over you in a straddled position with a collar grab attack. Trap opponent's left leg with your right arm, reach upward with your left arm towards opponent's armpit, push strong with your left leg and roll towards your right side.
Shoots
Shoot #1 Facing opponent, travel forward with the left leg into a left kneeling stance, place left hand on Achilles of opponent's right leg, place right forearm on opponent's right knee, just above knee cap and slightly to the inside. Stabilize with left hand, push with right forearm.
Shoot #2 Facing opponent, travel forward with the right leg into a right kneeling stance, place right hand on Achilles of opponent's left leg, place left forearm on opponent's left knee, just above knee cap and slightly to the inside. Stabilize with right hand, push with left forearm.
Shoot #3 Attempt shoot #1, however, opponent moves their leg out of the way. Quickly place right hand at opponent's left Achilles and left forearm at their knee, just above knee cap and slightly to the inside. Alternate to a right kneeling stance as you stabilize with your right hand and push with your left forearm.
Shoot #4 Attempt shoot #2, however, opponent moves their leg out of the way. Quickly place left hand at opponent's right Achilles and right forearm at their knee, just above knee cap and slightly to the inside. Alternate to a left kneeling stance as you stabilize with your left hand and push with your right forearm.
Atemi's The atemi's are hard body strikes done to counter an attack. They are done after the completion of a takedown, hip throw or takeover.
Atemi Iti
Left side While kneeling beside the attacker, place your right hand on their chin to push their face away from you. Strike with your left fist to their temple.
Right side While kneeling beside the attacker, place your left hand on their chin to push their face away from you. Strike with your right fist to their temple.
Atemi Ni
Left side While kneeling beside the attacker, place your right hand on their chin to push their face away from you. Strike with your left fist to their mastoid process.
Right side While kneeling beside the attacker, place your left hand on their chin to push their face away from you. Strike with your right fist to their mastoid process.
Atemi San
Left side While kneeling beside the attacker, place your left hand on their forehead keep their face upward. Strike with a right palm strike to the nose.
Right side While kneeling beside the attacker, place your right hand on their forehead keep their face upward. Strike with a left palm strike to the nose.
Atemi Si
Left side While kneeling beside the attacker, place your left hand on their forehead keep their face upward. Strike with a right knuckle strike to the throat.
