Orange Belt Promotion Help

Kata: Heian Shodan

To execute this kata using the compass directions, make sure that north is the direction that you start from. You will only need to use the 8 compass directions of north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. Place the compass directions on your surrounding walls to make sure your directions are correct.

Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)

1.    Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.

2.    Maintain focus (west) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch.

3.    Turn 180 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right front stance, execute a right down block.

4.    Maintain focus (east) - foot check with the right foot and return to the right front stance position, execute a right circular vertical hammer strike.

5.    Maintain focus (east) - Travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left front punch.

6.    Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the north direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.

7.    Maintain focus (north) - maintain stance position, execute a left open hand rising block.

8.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right rising block.

9.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left rising block.

10.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch. (kiai)

11.    Turn 270 degrees to the left until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.

12.    Maintain focus (east) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch.

13.    Turn 180 degrees to the right until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right front stance, execute a right down block.

14.    Maintain focus (west) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left front punch.

15.    Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a left down block.

16.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch.

17.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left front punch.

18.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch. (kiai)

19.    Turn 270 degrees to the left until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.

20.    Focus 45 degrees to the right (northwest) - travel forward into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.

21.    Turn 135 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.

22.    Focus 45 degrees to the left (northeast) - travel forward into a left back stance, execute a left swordhand block.

To return to the ready position, focus 45 degrees to the left until the focus is back to the north direction, make a small move forward with the right foot, then bring the left foot back to the right foot.

Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)

 

Takedown Position

Left side:

1.    Step forward left into a left front stance. Left hand in fist, comes back to chest, Right hand in fist, palm facing down, extends straight out to the right side.

2.    Maintain focus and arm position, right foot travels forward in a "C" step motion to a horse stance.

3.    Maintain focus and foot position, pivot hips into a narrow front stance and draw right arm downward towards left knee. (Keep arm straight). Bring left hand back to left hip. Kiai.

Right side:

1.    Step forward right into a right front stance. right hand in fist, comes back to chest, Left hand in fist, palm facing down, extends straight out to the left side.

2.    Maintain focus and arm position, left foot travels forward in a "C" step motion to a horse stance.

3.    Maintain focus and foot position, pivot hips into a narrow front stance and draw left arm downward towards right knee. (Keep arm straight). Bring right hand back to right hip. Kiai. 

 

Self Defense Requirements

Applied Self Defense

Collar Grab    Left side- Palm Block    Step with the left leg into a horse stance, execute a left palm block to remove the hold.

Collar Grab    Right side - Palm Block   Step with the right leg into a horse stance, execute a right palm block to remove the hold.

Collar Grab    Left side  -Double Rising Break  Step with the left leg into a front stance, execute a double extended rising break to remove the hold. Maintain your position and place your arms in the takedown position.

Collar Grab    Right side -Double Rising Break  Step with the right leg into a front stance, execute a double extended rising break to remove the hold. Maintain your position and place your arms in the takedown position.

Choke Hold    Left side - Trap    Trap your arms above your attacker's arms and grab your wrist. Travel in reverse with your left leg into a right front stance and pull your attackers arms down towards your stomach to control their arms.

Choke Hold    Right side -Trap   Trap your arms above your attacker's arms and grab your wrist. Travel in reverse with your right leg into a left front stance and pull your attackers arms down towards your stomach to control their arms.

Choke Hold    Left side -Scoop & Redirection   With your left arm, execute a left downward scoop over your attackers right arm. With your right hand, come up between your attackers arms and grab your left wrist. Pull your left arm down towards your stomach and raise your right elbow up as you move your left leg and turn 180 degrees to the left into a left kneeling stance to take down your attacker.

Choke Hold    Right side -Scoop & Redirection    With your right arm, execute a right downward scoop over your attackers left arm. With your left hand, come up between your attackers arms and grab your right wrist. Pull your right arm down towards your stomach and raise your left elbow up as you move your right leg and turn 180 degrees to the right into a right kneeling stance to take down your attacker.

Wrist Grab   Left side -Break Away   Step back from your attacker with the left leg into a right fighting stance, pull your left arm back to a backarm block position by bending your elbow and escaping the wrist grab at your attacker's thumb. Right arm enters a down block position.

Wrist Grab   Right side -Break Away    Step back from your attacker with the right leg into a left fighting stance, pull your right arm back to a backarm block position by bending your elbow and escaping the wrist grab at your attacker's thumb. Left arm enters a down block position.

Wrist Grab    Left side -Trap & Reverse Elbow   Travel forward with the left leg into a left front stance while reversing the grab in a counter-clockwise direction. Execute a reverse elbow strike.

Wrist Grab    Right side  -Trap & Reverse Elbow   Travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance while reversing the grab in a clockwise direction. Execute a reverse elbow strike.

Wrist Grab    Left side - Drop Wedge     Drop down to a left balanced stance and with the left hand execute a rising wedge block to reverse the grab

Wrist Grab    Right side  - Drop Wedge  Drop down to a right balanced stance and with the right hand execute a rising wedge block to reverse the grab

Front Punch    Left side - Cover Block    Travel forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute a left cover block. Enter a takedown position.

Front Punch    Right side - Cover Block    Travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a right cover block. Enter a takedown position.

Front Punch    Left side - Cover Block/Counter    Travel forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute a left cover block, followed by a right reverse punch.

Front Punch    Right side- Cover Block/Counter    Travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a right cover block, followed by a left reverse punch.

Round Punch    Left side - Duck Under   Travel forward into a left balanced stance with hands in a peaceful guard position, duck under the punch and slightly push attacker in the back.

Round Punch    Right side- Duck Under   Travel forward into a right balanced stance with hands in a peaceful guard position, duck under the punch and slightly push attacker in the back.

Round Punch    Left side- Extended Rising Block   Travel forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute a left extended rising block. Pull arm down and enter a takedown position.

Round Punch    Right side - Extended Rising Block    Travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a right extended rising block. Pull arm down and enter a takedown position.

Round Punch    Left side - Headslap Redirection     Step forward with the right foot into a right balanced stance. With left arm, execute a left rising scoop and with the right arm, execute the head-slap position. Continue turning, moving only the left leg, 360 degrees to the left and redirect the attacker to the ground.

Round Punch    Right side - Headslap Redirection   Step forward with the left foot into a left balanced stance. With right arm, execute a right rising scoop and with the left arm, execute the head-slap position. Continue turning, moving only the right leg, 360 degrees to the right and redirect the attacker to the ground.

Push    Left side - Downward Scoop        Step forward into a left front stance, double downward scooping blocks to remove attack, shoulder bump to attacker. Maintain takedown position.

Push    Right side - Downward Scoop       Step forward into a right front stance, double downward scooping blocks to remove attack, shoulder bump to attacker. Maintain takedown position.

Earslap    Left side - Double Rising Scoop w/ Shuto    Step forward into a left front stance, double rising scooping blocks to block attack, step forward, feet together, double shuto strikes to the attackers Mastoid Process.

Earslap    Right side - Double Rising Scoop w/ Shuto    Step forward into a right front stance, double rising scooping blocks to block attack, step forward, feet together, double shuto strikes to the attackers Mastoid Process.

Bearhug       Left side - Pull the carpet     Maintain an attention stance position, thrust both arms forward and utilize your hips to thrust backward towards your opponent's lower abdomen. Focus over your left shoulder, with your right hand - grab your opponent's left wrist. Continue focusing towards your attacker, draw your left elbow across the attackers jaw while turning to face your attacker by crossing your left foot behind your right foot to enter a left front stance. Control your opponent by grabbing their right arm with your left hand and placing your extended right arm across their throat. * At this point, you should be in position one of the Takedown Position.

Bearhug       Right side- Pull the carpet     Maintain an attention stance position, thrust both arms forward and utilize your hips to thrust backward towards your opponent's lower abdomen. Focus over your right shoulder, with your left hand - grab your opponent's right wrist. Continue focusing towards your attacker, draw your right elbow across the attackers jaw while turning to face your attacker by crossing your right foot behind your left foot to enter a right front stance. Control your opponent by grabbing their left arm with your right hand and placing your extended left arm across their throat. * At this point, you should be in position one of the Takedown Position.

Bearhug    Left side - Horse Stance    Step left into a horse stance, draw both hands back to hips. Execute a right center punch to help release the grab, followed by a right elbow strike to the xyphoid process and a left hook punch to the face.

Bearhug    Right side - Horse Stance  Step right into a horse stance, draw both hands back to hips. Execute a left center punch to help release the grab, followed by a left elbow strike to the xyphoid process and a right hook punch to the face.

Headlock   Left side - Hammer Strike    With your attacker on your left side, step forward with your right foot into a right balanced stance, execute a left hammer strike to the back shoulder of your opponent. While grabbing you opponent's right wrist with your right hand, slide your left hand over their right shoulder to push on their jaw. Stand up, push on the jaw and begin to peel their right wrist backwards. Focus 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance. While you are turning, duck under the right arm of the attacker, swing their arm in a clockwise motion with your right arm and transfer their arm to your left hand. Place your extended right arm across their throat. * At this point, you should be in position one of the Takedown Position.

Headlock   Rightside - Hammer Strike    With your attacker on your right side, step forward with your left foot into a left balanced stance, execute a right hammer strike to the back shoulder of your opponent. While grabbing you opponent's left wrist with your left hand, slide your right hand over their left shoulder to push on their jaw. Stand up, push on the jaw and begin to peel their left wrist backwards. Focus 180 degrees to the right until your focus is in the south direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right front stance. While you are turning, duck under the left arm of the attacker, swing their arm in a counter-clockwise motion with your left arm and transfer their arm to your right hand. Place your extended left arm across their throat. * At this point, you should be in position one of the Takedown Position.

Headlock    Left side - Roll out    With the attacker on your left side, place your left hand on their back and your right hand on their right knee. Execute a log roll by placing your back on the ground just in front of their feet. Continue to hold on as the attacker rolls with you.

Headlock    Right side - Roll out    With the attacker on your right side, place your right hand on their back and your left hand on their left knee. Execute a log roll by placing your back on the ground just in front of their feet. Continue to hold on as the attacker rolls with you.

Uppercut    Left side - Hammer Block    Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's right side forward, step forward into a left front stance and execute a left hammer block and enter the takedown position.

Uppercut    Right side - Hammer Block   Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's left side forward, step forward into a right front stance and execute a right hammer block and enter the takedown position.

Uppercut    Left side - Inai    Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's right side forward, step forward into a left front stance and execute a right reverse swordhand block.

Uppercut    Left side - Inai    Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's left side forward, step forward into a right front stance and execute a left reverse swordhand block.

Overhead    Left side -X Block Redirection    Step forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute an open-hand rising x block and quickly redirect the strike in a circular clockwise motion to enter the takedown position.

Overhead    Right side -X Block Redirection    Step forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute an open-hand rising x block and quickly redirect the strike in a circular counter-clockwise motion to enter the takedown position.

 

As with ALL attacks, the side you step to is determined by the stance of the attacker.

If they are in a right fighting stance, you step to their left side (your right). If they are in a left fighting stance, you step to their right side (your left).  *Exception - uppercut strike

Remember to keep your distance from attacker far enough away that they have to move to attack you.
