Green Belt Promotion Help

Kata: Heian Yodan

To execute this kata using the compass directions, make sure that north is the direction that you start from. You will only need to use the 8 compass directions of north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. Place the compass directions on your surrounding walls to make sure your directions are correct.

Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)

1.   Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left back stance, execute double open hand preparations over the right thigh.

2.    Maintain focus (west) and maintain stance (left back stance), with dynamic breathing, execute a left open hand backarm block and right open hand rising block

3.    Turn 180 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right back stance, execute double open hand preparations over the left thigh.

4.    Maintain focus (east) and maintain stance (right back stance), with dynamic breathing, execute a right open hand backarm block and left open hand rising block

5.    Focus 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the north direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a downward x block.

6.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right into a right back stance, execute a right doublefist block.

7.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the left into an attention stance, execute a right hammer catch.

8.    Focus 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the west direction. Execute a left side kick, then step down so that you are in a right front stance facing the north direction. (Focus should still be facing west). While executing the side kick, simultaneously execute a left backfist strike, and leave it extended when you enter your stance.

9.    Maintain focus (west) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the left to enter a left front stance, execute an right augmented elbow strike into the extended left hand.

10.    Focus 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the north direction (moving only the left leg) - enter an attention stance, execute a left hammer catch.

11.    Focus 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction. Execute a right side kick, then step down so that you are in a left front stance facing the north direction. (Focus should still be facing east). While executing the side kick, simultaneously execute a right backfist strike, and leave it extended when you enter your stance.

12.    Maintain focus (east) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the right to enter a right front stance, execute an left augmented elbow strike into the extended right hand.

13.    Maintain stance (front) - focus 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the north direction, execute double open hand blocks (left arm - open hand down block and right arm - open hand rising block).

14.    Maintain focus (north) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the left to enter a left front stance, execute a left open hand rising block and a right shuto strike.

15.    Maintain focus (north) and arm position - travel forward by executing a right front kick , then stepping forward into a right narrow front stance.

16.    Maintain focus (north) - moving only the left leg, travel forward into a right cross stance, execute a right back knuckle strike. (kiai)

17.    Turn 225 degrees to the left until focus is in the southeast direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left back stance, execute a middle level x block.

18.    Maintain focus (southeast) - maintain stance, execute  press blocks to open blocks to shoulder width.

19.    Maintain focus (southeast) - prepare arms by extending left arm into front punch position and retracting right hand back to right hip, execute a right leg front kick, then step forward with kicking leg into a right front stance.

20.    Maintain focus (southeast) - maintain stance, execute first a front punch with the right arm, then a reverse punch with the left arm.

21.    Turn 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the southwest direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right back stance, execute a middle level x block.

22.     Maintain focus (southwest) - maintain stance, execute press blocks to open blocks to shoulder width.

23.    Maintain focus (southwest) - prepare arms by extending right arm into front punch position and retracting left hand back to left hip, execute a left leg front kick, then step forward with kicking leg into a left front stance.

24.    Maintain focus (southwest) - maintain stance, execute first a front punch with the left arm, then a reverse punch with the right arm.

25.    Turn 45 degrees to the left until focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left back stance, execute a doublefist block.

26.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward with the right leg into a right back stance, execute a right doublefist block.

27.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward with the left leg into a left back stance, execute a left doublefist block.

28.    Maintain focus (south) - maintain foot position, but elongate the stance forward to a narrow front stance, execute a double diagonal spearhand preparation.

29.    Maintain focus (south) - execute a right leg knee thrust while drawing both hands down slapping each side of the knee. Maintain the balanced position with a left hook stance. (kiai)

30.    Turn 180 degrees to the left until the focus is in the north direction (step down with right left to the rear, so that you are in a left back stance) - execute a left swordhand block.

31.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with right leg into a right back stance, execute a right swordhand block.

To return to the ready position, maintain focus north, bring left foot up to right foot then to a ready position.

4.    Focus 90 degrees to the right until your focus is in the east direction (moving only your right leg) - enter a right back stance, execute a right forearm block.

5.    Maintain focus (east) - maintain stance, execute a left extended hook punch.

6.    Focus 90 degrees to the left until your focus is in the north direction (moving only the left leg) - enter an attention stance, bring both arms across your body to execute a left hammer catch.

7.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right leg - enter a right back stance, execute a right doublefist block.

8.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the left leg - enter a left front stance, execute a downward x block.

9.    Maintain focus (north) - maintain stance (left front stance) - execute a rising x block.

10.    Maintain focus (north) - maintain stance (left front stance) - Open both hands in the rising x block position, draw right hand around left until the palm heels of each hand are touching (hands should almost look like a Y), cup hands together in a trapping motion and pull hands back to the right hip in a reverse hammer catch position.

11.    Maintain focus (north) - maintain stance (left front stance) - execute a left horizontal hammer strike.

12.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a right front punch. (kiai)

13.    Focus 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the south direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right side horse stance, execute a right down block.

14.    Focus 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the north direction - maintain your stance, execute double hook punches (right arm over left arm).

15.    Maintain focus (north) and stance (side horse stance) - with dynamic breathing, execute a left open hand backarm block and return your right hand back to the right hip.

16.    Maintain focus (north) and left arm position (open hand backarm block) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the left until your ki is facing north.

17.    Maintain focus (north) and arm position, travel forward into a right side horse stance by executing a right reverse wheel kick that strikes the palm of your extended left hand.

18.    Maintain focus (north) and stance (right side horse stance) - execute a right elbow strike into the extended left hand.

19.    Maintain focus (north) and stance (right side horse stance) - execute a left hammer catch.

20.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a right cross stance, execute a right doublefist block.

21.    Maintain focus (north) bring left foot out of cross stance position and return to an attention stance - lower center by bending your knees and draw your doublefist block down towards your right hip.

22.    Maintain focus (north) and stance (attention stance) - raise center by straightening legs and execute a rising augmented uppercut strike. (As the rising augmented uppercut strike passes your head level, redirect your focus 180 degrees to the left until it is in the south direction).

23.    Maintain focus (south) - with a jumping motion, enter a right cross stance and execute a downward x block. (kiai)

24.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a doublefist block.

25.    Maintain focus (south) and stance (right front stance) - prepare arms for next technique by executing a right arm open hand rising block and a left arm open hand down block.

26.    Focus 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the north direction. (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance. Maintain arm positions.

27.    Maintain focus (north) and stance (left front stance) - execute a right swordhand strike.

28.    Maintain focus (north) - adjust your stance to a left balanced stance and execute a right backarm block and a left down block.

29.    Maintain focus (north) - draw the left foot to the right foot to an attention stance positionat a 45 degree angle. Maintain arm positions.

30.    Maintain focus (north) and adjust stance (attention stance) to the (north) direction - prepare arms for next technique by executing a left arm open hand rising block and a right arm open hand down block.

31.    Maintain focus (north) -  travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance. Maintain arm positions.

32.    Maintain focus (north) and stance (right front stance) - execute a left swordhand strike.

33.    Maintain focus (north) - adjust your stance to a right balanced stance and execute a left backarm block and a right down block.

34.    Maintain focus (north) - draw the right foot to the left foot to an attention stance position. Maintain arm positions.

To return to the ready position, maintain your focus in the north direction, move your right leg out to the ready position.

TAKEOVERS

Collar Grab    Left side    Step with the left leg into a horse stance, execute a palm block to remove the hold. Maintain your position and place your arms in the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Collar Grab    Right side    Step with the right leg into a horse stance, execute a palm block to remove the hold. Maintain your position and place your arms in the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Choke Hold    Left side    Trap your arms above your attacker's arms and grab your wrist. Travel in reverse with your left leg into a right front stance and pull your attackers arms down towards your stomach to control their arms. Step forward towards their front leg and enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Choke Hold    Right side    Trap your arms above your attacker's arms and grab your wrist. Travel in reverse with your right leg into a left front stance and pull your attackers arms down towards your stomach to control their arms. Step forward towards their front leg and enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Wrist Grab    Left side    Travel forward with the left leg into a left front stance while trapping the opponent's wrist with your right hand. Enter a takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Wrist Grab    Right side    Travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance while trapping the opponent's wrist with your left hand. Enter a takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Front Punch    Left side    Travel forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute a right reverse swordhand block. Enter a takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Front Punch    Right side    Travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute a left reverse swordhand block. Enter a takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Round Punch    Left side    Travel forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute an open hand rising trap with the right arm. Redirect to the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Round Punch    Right side    Travel forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute an open hand rising trap with the left arm. Redirect to the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Push    Left side        Step forward into a left front stance, double downward scooping blocks to remove attack, redirect to the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Push    Right side        Step forward into a right front stance, double downward scooping blocks to remove attack, redirect to the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Earslap    Left side    Step forward into a left front stance, double rising scooping blocks to block attack. Trap arms and enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Earslap    Right side    Step forward into a right front stance, double rising scooping blocks to block attack. Trap arms and enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Bearhug       Left side     Maintain an attention stance position, thrust both arms forward and utilize your hips to thrust backward towards your opponent's lower abdomen. Focus over your left shoulder, with your right hand - grab your opponent's left wrist. Slide to the left into a horse stance while going under their arm. Focus towards the attacker. Step back slightly with the right foot to enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Bearhug       Right side     Maintain an attention stance position, thrust both arms forward and utilize your hips to thrust backward towards your opponent's lower abdomen. Focus over your right shoulder, with your left hand - grab your opponent's right wrist. Slide to the right into a horse stance while going under their arm. Focus towards the attacker. Step back slightly with the left foot to enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Headlock   Left side    With your attacker on your left side, step forward with your right foot into a right balanced stance, execute a left hammer strike to the back shoulder of your opponent. While grabbing you opponent's right wrist with your right hand, slide your left hand over their right shoulder to push on their jaw. Stand up, push on the jaw and begin to peel their right wrist backwards. Focus 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left front stance. While you are turning, duck under the right arm of the attacker, swing their arm in a clockwise motion with your right arm and transfer their arm to your left hand.  Enter a takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Headlock   Rightside    With your attacker on your right side, step forward with your left foot into a left balanced stance, execute a right hammer strike to the back shoulder of your opponent. While grabbing you opponent's left wrist with your left hand, slide your right hand over their left shoulder to push on their jaw. Stand up, push on the jaw and begin to peel their left wrist backwards. Focus 180 degrees to the right until your focus is in the south direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right front stance. While you are turning, duck under the left arm of the attacker, swing their arm in a counter-clockwise motion with your left arm and transfer their arm to your right hand. Enter a takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Uppercut    Left side    Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's right side forward, step forward into a left front stance and execute a right reverse swordhand block and enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Uppercut    Right side    Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's left side forward, step forward into a right front stance and execute a left reverse swordhand block and enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Overhead    Left side    Step forward with the left leg into a left front stance, execute an open-hand rising x block and quickly redirect the strike in a circular clockwise motion to enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

Overhead    Right side    Step forward with the right leg into a right front stance, execute an open-hand rising x block and quickly redirect the strike in a circular counter-clockwise motion to enter the takeover position. Continue the takeover position to execute the takeover.

 

As with ALL attacks, the side you step to is determined by the stance of the attacker.

If they are in a right fighting stance, you step to their left side (your right). If they are in a left fighting stance, you step to their right side (your left).  *Exception - uppercut strike

Remember to keep your distance from attacker far enough away that they have to move to attack you.
