Kata: Heian Sandan

To execute this kata using the compass directions, make sure that north is the direction that you start from. You will only need to use the 8 compass directions of north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. Place the compass directions on your surrounding walls to make sure your directions are correct.

Ready Position, Feet Together (Kiotsuke), Bow (Rei), Ready Position (Yoi)

1.    Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left back stance, execute a left forearm block.

2.    Maintain focus (west) - travel forward into an attention stance, execute a right forearm block and a left down block.

3.    Maintain focus (west) and stance (attention) - alternate arms to a left forearm block and a right down block.

4.    Turn 180 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right back stance, execute a right forearm block.

5.    Maintain focus (east) - travel forward into an attention stance, execute a left forearm block and a right down block.

6.    Maintain focus (east) and stance (attention) - alternate arms to a right forearm block and a left down block.

7.    Focus 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the north direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left back stance, execute a left doublefist block.

8.      Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a right narrow front stance - execute a right spearhand strike.

9.    Turn 360 degrees to the left until the focus is back in the north direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left side horse stance, execute  left horizontal hammer strike.

10.    Maintain focus (north) - travel forward into a right front stance, execute a right front punch. (kiai)

11.    Turn 180 degrees to the left until the focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter an attention stance, bring both hands to a rest position at the hips.

12.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a right narrow front stance by executing a right leg block. Hands remain in the rest position.

13.    Maintain focus (south) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the left to enter a side horse stance.

14.    Maintain focus (south) and stance (side horse stance) - execute a right backfist strike.

15.    Maintain focus (south) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the right to enter a right narrow front stance.

16.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a left narrow front stance by executing a left leg block. Hands remain in the rest position.

17.    Maintain focus (south) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the right to enter a side horse stance.

18.    Maintain focus (south) and stance (side horse stance) - execute a left backfist strike.

19.    Maintain focus (south) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the left to enter a left narrow front stance.

20.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a right narrow front stance by executing a right leg block. Hands remain in the rest position.

21.    Maintain focus (south) - pivot hips 90 degrees to the left to enter a side horse stance.

22.    Maintain focus (south) and stance (side horse stance) - execute a right backfist strike. (Retract the backfist only half-way)

23.    Maintain focus (south) - travel forward into a left front stance, execute a left front punch.

24.    Maintain focus (south) and arm position - travel forward with the right leg into a horse stance.

25.    Focus left. Moving only the left leg, turn 180 degrees into a horse stance - while looking over the left shoulder, execute a left elbow strike by drawing your left hand to your hip and execute a right hook punch over the left shoulder.

26.    Focus right. Maintain the horse stance while shuffling to the right - while looking over the right shoulder, execute a right elbow strike by drawing your right hand to your hip and execute a left hook punch over the right shoulder. (kiai)

To return to the ready position, focus 180 degrees to the left until the focus is back to the north direction,  bring the left foot back to the right foot and then to the ready position.

Takeover Position

Left side:

1.    Step forward left into a left front stance. Trap hands right hand over left just above the left knee.

2.    Turn 90 degrees to the left until the focus is in the west direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a horse stance, draw both hands directly above head.

3.   Turn 90 degrees to the left until focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a right front stance, execute a reverse hammer catch at the left hip. (kiai)

Right side:

1.    Step forward right into a right front stance. Trap hands left hand over right just above the right knee.

2.    Turn 90 degrees to the right until the focus is in the east direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a horse stance, draw both hands directly above head.

3.   Turn 90 degrees to the right until focus is in the south direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a left front stance, execute a reverse hammer catch at the right hip. (kiai)

 

 

Self Defense Requirements

HIP THROWS

Collar Grab    Left side    Step with the right leg into a side stance, execute a double extended rising break to remove the hold. Maintain your position and place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Collar Grab    Right side    Step with the left leg into a side stance, execute a double extended rising break to remove the hold. Maintain your position and place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Choke Hold    Left side    Trap your arms above your attacker's arms and grab your wrist. Travel in reverse with your left leg into a right side stance and pull your attackers arms down towards your stomach to control their arms. Maintain your position and place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Choke Hold    Right side    Trap your arms above your attacker's arms and grab your wrist. Travel in reverse with your right leg into a left side stance and pull your attackers arms down towards your stomach to control their arms. Maintain your position and place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Wrist Grab    Left side    Travel forward with the right leg into a right side stance while reversing the grab in a counter-clockwise direction. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Wrist Grab    Right side    Travel forward with the left leg into a left side stance while reversing the grab in a counter-clockwise direction. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Front Punch    Left side    Travel forward with the right leg into a right side stance, execute a left swordhand block. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Front Punch    Right side    Travel forward with the left leg into a left side stance, execute a right swordhand block. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Round Punch    Left side    Travel forward with the right leg into a right side stance, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Round Punch    Right side    Travel forward with the left leg into a left side stance, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Push    Left side        Step forward into a right side stance, double downward scooping blocks to remove attack, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Push    Right side        Step forward into a left side stance, double downward scooping blocks to remove attack, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Earslap    Left side    Step forward into a right side stance, double rising scooping blocks to remove attack, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Earslap    Right side    Step forward into a left side stance, double rising scooping blocks to remove attack, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Bearhug       Left side     Maintain an attention stance position, thrust both arms forward and utilize your hips to thrust backward towards your opponent's lower abdomen. Focus over your left shoulder, with your right hand - grab your opponent's left wrist. Continue focusing towards your attacker, draw your left elbow across the attackers jaw while turning 360 degrees by crossing your left foot behind your right foot to enter a right side stance. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Bearhug       Right side     Maintain an attention stance position, thrust both arms forward and utilize your hips to thrust backward towards your opponent's lower abdomen. Focus over your right shoulder, with your left hand - grab your opponent's right wrist. Continue focusing towards your attacker, draw your right elbow across the attackers jaw while turning 360 degrees by crossing your right foot behind your left foot to enter a left side stance. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Headlock   Left side    With your attacker on your left side, step forward with your right foot into a right balanced stance, execute a left hammer strike to the back shoulder of your opponent. While grabbing your opponent's right wrist with your right hand, slide your left hand over their right shoulder to push on their jaw. Stand up, push on the jaw and begin to peel their right wrist backwards. Focus 180 degrees to the left until your focus is in the south direction (moving only the right leg) - enter a right side stance. While you are turning, duck under the right arm of the attacker, swing their arm in a clockwise motion with your right arm and transfer their arm to your left hand. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Headlock   Rightside    With your attacker on your right side, step forward with your left foot into a left balanced stance, execute a right hammer strike to the back shoulder of your opponent. While grabbing your opponent's left wrist with your left hand, slide your right hand over their left shoulder to push on their jaw. Stand up, push on the jaw and begin to peel their left wrist backwards. Focus 180 degrees to the right until your focus is in the south direction (moving only the left leg) - enter a left side stance. While you are turning, duck under the right arm of the attacker, swing their arm in a counter-clockwise motion with your left arm and transfer their arm to your right hand. Place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Uppercut    Left side    Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's right side forward, step forward into a right side stance and execute a left reverse swordhand block, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Uppercut    Right side    Since the attacker is closer on this attack as with the others, we will step to the front leg of the attacker. With the attacker's left side forward, step forward into a left side stance and execute a right reverse swordhand block, place your arms in the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Overhead    Left side    Step forward with the right leg into a right side stance, execute an open-hand rising x block and quickly redirect the strike in a circular clockwise motion to enter the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

Overhead    Right side    Step forward with the left leg into a left side stance, execute an open-hand rising x block and quickly redirect the strike in a circular counter-clockwise motion to enter the hip throw position. Continue the hip throw position to execute the hip throw.

 

As with ALL attacks, the side you step to is determined by the stance of the attacker.

If they are in a right fighting stance, you step to their left side (your right). If they are in a left fighting stance, you step to their right side (your left).  *Exception - uppercut strike

Remember to keep your distance from attacker far enough away that they have to move to attack you.
